Print and the books
TJ's books are the family's print system, and the portfolio's format bridges print and the web: the same HTML pages are the site and the PDF.
The portfolio and the books
thomasjmcleish.com is the person; aroughidea.com is the practice. Its public pages will be rebuilt on v2 around the reframed work. The books carry forward: they are the most rigorous design in all of TJ's work, and the only serious print work in the family.
Decided two sites, linked both ways (TJ, October 24)
How the two sites relate
- thomasjmcleish.com holds the career; aroughidea.com, what someone can work with TJ on now.
- One design system, two wordmarks: TJ's name on one, the square A on the other.
- Linked both ways; one home per project; no subdomain such as tj.aroughidea.com.
What the books already have
- An 8.5×11 page, a 6-column grid, margins that swap between verso and recto.
- Ink grays on white paper, white by decision, and one color per chapter.
- Running feet, numbered figures and captions; a reader with spreads, single pages and a phone flow; PDFs from the same HTML.
What flows into v2
- The print frame: the books' page, grid, folio and figures.
- A book format for any long read: handouts, walkthroughs, a portfolio.
- The type: Archivo and IBM Plex, already the books'.
